Woman Riders NeededDecember 1, 2006 @ 1:21pm
Iv'e been looking at the race results from the past and have noticed there is not many woman riding. Does anyone have promotional ideas or coments. I recently asked Heather Wilson a GNCC/Enduro womans champion this same question. Her response follows.

It's tough getting the women involved in the sport. I found they are intimidated. When I created women's classes inside of the men's classes they were really encouraged to show up. I got the numbers from 15 up to 90 in just 6 months. What they needed was a class that fit their skills and that gave them an invitation to join the men. Before that they didn't think they were really wanted or allowed to ride with the guys. The biggest class we have though is the Beginner women that run on the youth course by themselves for 45 minutes. The guys love pitting for their women and it's on Saturday before their race. I'll get 20-30 women of all ages for that one. It gets them ready to move into the Women C with all the men. Some just stay in the beginner class and don't want the chaos of all the guys passing them. I have the women's rules and classes up on my site if you want to print them out and take them to your district for review. Maybe you can start something scaled down from that. The real key to getting the more serious girls committed was placing the Women C on the back row of the men's C and the Women B on the front row of the men's C class. It gave them some sort of advancement without putting them into the men's A/B classes before they really had to battle for an over all against 200 male C riders. Now that the girls are trickling into the men's A/B they are very comfy and competitive against the guys. It took about 3 years for it all to shake out and the guys to stop complaining about the girls being on their front row in front of them. Good luck.
