I blieve we should make detailed formal request and follow through. We should formally ask for the tie in trail jim has done between BC and MC. We need to ask the Mt Nebo supervisor for the use of some of the State Park land.

Trail ridingAugust 1, 2006 @ 9:22pm
I have spent the last few days riding with Layne and Montana. Montana rode the new Xtreme Typhoon and climbed the power line near Del Norte. Yesterday I rode the Robert Bryum preped XR230. Layne and I rejeted it by adjusting the fuel screw after we change the main jet to a 105 from a 125. The local shop advised to go up on the pilot and down on the main jet. The 230 is down on power but it was a blast to ride. I could staup off the bottom of the trails and even though the rear brake is a little vague it can be ridden prety fast. It is a great teacher because if you do anything to cause a loss of speed your riding buddies will gain a lot of ground on you before you can regain your momentum.
I have been riding in the extreme high country above Crested Butte. Awesome views. We rode to Slate, Crystal, and Gothic today. When I returned to the trailer I use a spotting scope to watch the elk begin feeding. Great day in the Forest, heading home tomorrow and build trail.
Thanks Carry.

New Trail - replyAugust 2, 2006 @ 11:34am
Gorman,
It will very difficult for the USFS to approve the route I have established from MG to BC. The trail right now is legal only for licensed DP bikes. The route travels on county roads, private land, illeagle trails and about 1/4 mile of Hwy 27.
There is a way around the private land but it would then put the riders on Hwy 27 for about 4 miles.

But, THEY could if they wanted to allow us to build trail around the county roads and private land.
This would of course take ten years, an EIS and all the other cr*p involved.

The route also crosses some demarcation line between USFS districts so it would take the cooperation of two USFS units.

If we get that done in our lifetime I know of a route which connects MG with White Rock which our grandkids could work on.

stay cool,

I want to ride from MG to White Rock. We won't ever get permission unless we are already using the route. Remember, they don't ever say yes, only maybe. Until you have a route, there's nothing to officially ask for. Do you think we could find another route from BC to MG all on F.S. land? How bout from MG to WR?

MG to WR and BEARS!August 7, 2006 @ 11:34pm
JGAS? That's a new one! You are still Jeffo to me.

Anyway. Can we get from MG to BC on USFS land? Yes and no. There are three problems in doing so, and private land isn't one of them.
1) State highways 7 and 27.
2) County roads Old Hwy 27 and what ever county roads are between (27 & BC) which we would need to cross or use as transit roads.
3) The demarcation line between Piney Creeks Ranger District and Bayou Bluff Ranger District.

I know of a route that takes the trail up and out of the last three miles or so of creek bottom roads before crossing Hwy 27 (going west to east). The problem with that route is that it crosses Hwy 27 at the Middle Fork Wilderness Area. And I don't care who's chain you are pulling at the USFS you are not going to get a motorized trail though a wilderness area.
I have to ride about 4 miles south on Hwy 27 to clear the wilderness area before I can cut east again through the forest to BC.

But this is something we need to work on this winter. Sorry, I don't do much trail work in the summer.

Bears at BC, that's pretty cool.

I only have the Cass to MG in my head and as ides on maps. I do believe it is doable. All we really need to do is parallel Darrel's trail, The Ozark Highland Trail.
Problem with that is that the area just to the west of Pelsor is a Wilderness Area and the rest is mostly private land. But I THINK it is still doable. I know a couple of the land owners and I THINK all we have to do there is cut further south to stay on USFS land and come out at Treat. Problem with that is we will need to cross Big Piney Creek (see bridge referal below).

From Treat it's a hop-skip-and jump to MG. Problem there is Moccasin Creek which gets pretty deep when the water is flowing. (Gee, might need a bridge! But I know USFS folks who build bridges, even if you don't need them)

I'm trying to work out a deal on a new DRZ400ES. If I get it by late fall you can bet I'll be riding from the London garage with ribbon and loppers to establish new trails!

We MIGHT get permission to skirt the Wilderness area on the boundry without getting inside it. I have seen wilderness areas that border lease and timber properties. I don't have a problem with having a dual sport route from BC to MG using some paved and dirt roads. Todays dual sport bikes are almost as good as race bikes, and even race bikes can be make legal with enough work. Let's get it started with the F.S. and we'll sell it as a Dual Sport route, it'll make us seem all legal and upstanding! They don't have to know we're really just a bunch of middle age hoodlums.

Gorman, do you have a copy of a detailed formal request I can start typing up? Beleive it or not, I minored in writing in college. Actually made guud grades sumtymes.
