| Subiaco area | January 9, 2008 @ 1:49am | Has anyone spent any time at the riding area near Subiaco. I rode there for a couple hours once in 06. It seemed pretty cool, I was alone so I didn't venture too far. I can't remember the name of the road but I know it goes to a horse camp. Coming from Dardanelle it is just east a few miles from Subiaco on the left. There is a rock company at the beginning of the road. Go down the road, I'm not sure maybe five miles or so, cross a low water bridge and there is some parking on the road to the right. Hopefully someone can make out those confusing directions I just gave? |

When I turned right on the road after the little bridge, I drove several miles until it ended and there was a trail right at the end. Also the last time I just drove there there was a fresh road that was put in on the right that came out by a cemetery on a cnty rd. Does this sound familiar? Is there a trail map for this area? |

It's a fun area, but there is alot of traffic since the FS has seriously restricted the trail miles. Everyone is forced into a very small area, so due to lack of management by the FS in the area, it is overridden. Huckleberry is a prime example of management by closure. The FS people restricted the riding which was vast, to a very small area, which obviously got overridden, then blamed the users for their own lack of management. Huckleberry is a prime example of how NOT to manage an OHV area. The FS refused to work with user groups, who volunteered to help manage the area. Instead, they made arbitrary decisions which didn't work for anyone, especially themselves. If we in RVDR could ever open up a relationship with the officials there, and show them how an area can and should be managed, perhaps we could help get the system back in control. It's a goal for the future, I guess.
That said, it is still a decent area, just watch out for head on traffic. |
