Trials vs. MX TireJune 7, 2007 @ 11:14pm
What do you think of running trials tires on front and back? Keep the MX tire on front and trials on back? MX tires will sling clean--how do trials tires do when packed with mud?

Cary,
I've been running trials tires on the rear for over 800 miles (same tire). I will not ever run a regular knobby ever again! The trials tire is so superior I can't describe it.
Some say they don't work in mud, but I beg to differ. If the mud at hand has anything for the tire to grip on, it will. Of course I'm used to woods riding where there is seldom mud without roots, rocks, leaves, etc. in the mud. If the mud were pure gumbo, maybe it wouldn't perform as well.
The trials tire does not dig a hole like a knobby does in the mud, it flattens out and searches for anything to grab to.
Acceleration out of the mud is probably better with a knobby, but getting stuck is probably worse with a knobby.
The trials tire cleans out as well as any other tire.

Riding with a trial tire definitely takes a little getting used to. The biggest differences for me, and what I had to concentrate on were:
1. Killing the motor on technical hills because I expected the tire to slip and it just found traction.
2. Rear braking much later heading into turns because of the traction.
3. The bike maybe wanting to stand up more under hard breaking (have to hold it leaned over if that is the desired approach to a turn.
4. Takes more body English to get through tight sections.
5. Expecting the rear tire to slip, like over a wet log, and it doesn't!

You have to spend the bucks for the tubeless radial trials tire. Run it with a heavy duty tube at about 8-9 psi.

I run the IRC TR-11R. (cost about $100 but out lasts a knobby 4X.)

I wish I had a report of someone running a trials on the front. I'm almost tempted to try one.
But I think the fronts are bias-ply and not radial ply. That I think would make a difference.
One of the biggest things that makes a trials tire work so well is the radial construction.

I've only ridden other guys bikes and watched Devro and others do amazing things with trials tires. I'm mounting one up as soon as my current knobby wears out. I'd say at least for technical stuff like Brock, they're much better than a knobby.
