Has anyone had to bond anything to their side covers? I'm looking for the best way to make aluminum stay stuck to magnesium. I have CFC aluminum side cover guards that will not stay attached to the covers. I have tried Permatex, two-part adhesive and the ol' JB weld. The clutch side has never stayed on for any longer that an hour.

I used the OEM type grey RTV silicone that I got at Autozone to bond my case covers on my DRZ-400E. They have been on there for over two years now with no hint of coming off.

Make sure both surfaces are clean and free of grease or oil (carb cleaner like Berryman's B12 Chemtool works good to remove all traces of oil with no residue) and maybe even scuff lightly with sandpaper or steel wool to get good adhesion.

Apply a coating of RTV to both surfaces, press on side covers, wipe off excess RTV, put some tape on the covers to hold in place, wait 24 hours to remove tape, and you should be good to go.

Thanks Alan. I will give it a shot. This has been quite irritating. I have not tried regular rtv gray thinking that I would not hold up but if it has held that long for you, it should for me. I never scuffed the surface of the side covers before trying the others..duh. I look foreword to getting them back on so I can try getting above 2nd gear on this thing, although, most of my throwing the bike down happens at a stand-still. Right Doug? Thanks again Alan.

I may be a little late here, but this is the secret to getting aluminumum side cover to "stick".

Use a good quality RTV.
PUT ENOUGH ON SO THERE ARE NO AIR SPACES IN THE RTV!!!!!

Smash them on tight, wipe off what gooshes out, and that's it.

I know this a little behind the times, but I bet Shoe Goo would work well. I've yet to see anything it would'nt stick to. Never tried it with heat, though. I've rebuilt a pair of Alpinestars several times with it, and I used it to glue the aluminum frame protector/master cylinder guard on my KTM. It's been on there for 6 months.
