| Bears at Brock! | August 7, 2006 @ 7:29pm | I saw a big bear on a dirt road off of White Oak Mountain Sunday. It was about 5 1/2 to 6'tall, and not too scared of me coming at it on an Orange 2fiddy. It was on all fours in the road, as I got closer, it stood up, and started shaking it's head slowly, looking at me approach. At first, I sped up, wanting to get a closer look, but when I got to about 150 yrds, it was showing no signs of moving out of my way! The pucker factor went up a little. I slowed back down and got to about 50-75 yrds before if slowly ran off, in no real hurry. It's kinda hard to estimate a bears size and weight when you have only seen them in a Zoo, but it was about twice as big as the biggest St.Bernard or Bull Mastiff I have ever seen. I guess that would put it at about 300+ lbs.
I also almost finished a really tight "trials trail" in Schoolhouse Hollow. I think I'll call it "Hummingbird" since I almost got hit in the head by a Hummingbird. From Hummingbirds to Bears! What a day. I also found a nice cold waterhole which must be spring fed. The rest of the creek was dried up, except for this hole. It was cold! I was so hot, I just waded in gear and all. The trail is rideable now, but I need to mark it better and mark the last quarter mile, I ran out of ribbon. |
