| How to make a complete riding area. | May 27, 2008 @ 7:26pm | I just spent 3 days making trail and riding at Barnwell Mtn Texas. It is a large riding area with miles of 4x4, ATV, and Motorcycle Single-track trails. It is managed by a coalition of volunteers who bought the land from the State of Texas with grant money and some collected and private donations. Gary Hazel of Thumper Racing fame was one of the founding members. The area generates enough revenue from fees and events to pay a retired couple to live on site and manage the property. They closely monitor the area, doing everything possible to keep all users on the trails made for their type of machine.
Because the area is properly managed and large enough to contain 3 distinct types of trails, their is relatively little damage to any of the trails by unauthorized users. Signage is abundant, and all users are required to sign in each day, and are given a "rule sheet". Violations are taken seriously, only one warning is given for anyone littering, riding on the wrong trails, riding more than the authorized number of people on a machine, drinking and riding, or any other nonsense.
The guy who manages the trails while his wife runs the office and collects the money is named Lawton, and Lawton is a Pitbull! Don't mess with Lawton, or you'll find yourself promptly escorted off the property, losing your joining fee, and maybe being arrested if necessary. On the other hand, if you treat Lawton right, (once he gets to know you), he'll let you borrow his UTV, wash off with his personal home water hose, help you fix your bike, pull you out of a mudhole, or whatever else you might need.
Folks, we can do this! We can get together to create such a riding area for all OHV users. If we can (occasionally), beat Texas teams in football and basketball, surely Arkies can have a riding area like the one at Barnwell Mtn.
Let's start thinking seriously about this. We've been talking about it for a long time. |

Illinois got almost $950,000 for trails Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich announced multi-purpose recreational projects will receive $949,800 to create or improve trails in eight Illinois counties, according to the Illinois Department of Natural Resources.
Funding for the projects is supported by the federal government’s Recreational Trails Program, which provides up to 80 percent of the cost of the trail projects. Governor Blagojevich says the grants will increase recreational opportunities, including snowmobiling.
“The recreational trail projects supported by these federal and local funds are good news for both residents and visitors to these communities,” he said.

It would be best on private land so we could police it. The only problem is finding all the acreage we would need for a project like this.(well that isn't farmland) |
