A Good WeekendSeptember 2, 2008 @ 2:10am
Me, Dad and the boys Nicholas and Montana had a great time with Motorcycles this past weekend. We raced MX at Heber, where I remember Mikey getting some stiches in his chin before....and something about hurting his wing another time...
Nicholas rode his 105 Kawi to win with a large gate of bikes, supposably for 4 strokes but he was put there because there was no class for him. I do not think the CRF 150R was at a disadvantage, but they made sure to protest the two stroke anyway...Funny how petty some are. Montana rode Dad's Cr5 early prototype and was in the same gate, he ran fourth in the moto, 2nd in class. He was in a younger 4 stroke class. Too many classes of minibikes makes for a late night, my race was with the over 30 and 40 combined gate. I got 1 lap of practice which consisted of slowly riding the track so as not to jump into a hole like Mike did which resulted in stiches. Seems like the source of dirt for the jump was from the other side of the jump, Mikey did not clear the hole.
Anyway, I got the hole shot and lead several laps and finally got passed by a over 30 guy. The second moto I spun sideways off the start, but pulled back into the pack in the first turn, I hugged the inside with the gas on and was Second into the 2nd turn. Before the first lap was over, I got into the lead, Great I am thinking. I am experienceing some pressure behind me and after a lap or two, I see a guy that had crashed and being lapped pull onto the track in front of me. He gets going and holds me up for a lap or two and this increases the pressure behind me. I make a move to pass him on the down hill double on the outside and he moves to the outside, this is going to hurt somebody I am thinking.....We hung up and he falls hard and fast, and rips my jersey and brusies my side as his handlebar goes to the ground. I did not fall, but I paused to see if he was ok. I took off again, still leading, but not by any margin and on the next lap the over 30 guy takes me to the top of a banked turn and I have to back off. He passes me, but also lets a over 40 guy by and I finished 2nd in class.
Montana's second moto looked much better than the first, and his underpowered bike got him off the line near the back of the pack, but by the 4th turn, he had passed 3 bikes with him into 2nd in class, 3rd or 4th overall. He was much closer to running with the Leaders than the first moto. The leaders were the CRF150r, and Nicholas. The 150 was doing some doubles that Nicholas wasn't doing, and that was mostly the difference, but on the last lap, Nicholas put in a charge and cought the 150. His pass attempt left him on the ground in a turn, and he fell from spinning out, gas on with less than great traction, but we could all see his grit, determination and desire to win. It was great.
Hwy 89 was great, dusty in a few spots but generally great. Russellville was represented well with Doug, JV, Skyler, Me and Nicholas there as well as a friend of Doug's whose name escapes me. Johnny fouled a plug after 3 laps. My bike was crapping out at high rpm on the first lap so I thought the air filter was clogged somehow. I pulled into the pits and changed the filter and straightened MOntana's brake lever so he could continue his practice on the MX track. I finished 23rd overall and made 6 laps. Nicholas made 2 laps on the long course to go home with his first tough muscle soreness. Their mother said they were moving slowly this Labor day and were funny to watch. Dad was proud of all of us. A good weekend.

I must be getting old. I didn't have a complaint about anyones performance.
Nicholas said when he got the lead and was in the big sweeper, all he could think about was the expression on gramps face. Kim said,"look Nicholas
is leading." I said no way. Well he really was.
The guy who waited then pulled out in front of Layne and train, sure made a bad decission, he also paid dearly.
Great weekend.
