Think I am really going this time. June 4, 2008 @ 3:09pm
I think the Army really wants my old broke down carcass this time. They must be getting really desperate. I'm scheduled to report next Monday. Don't know if I'll make it through the training and medical stuff, I'm headed to an Infantry company so I guess it will be pretty rigorous. I have simply not had the time to do the interview that I promised. Chris White has agreed to do it for me, and if he can swing it he plans to go out and ride with whoever he interviews. He just lost his mother, and he is the go-to guy for his family, so he will be pretty busy for awhile. But he will get it done. From what I hear I won't actually go to Iraq for about 6 weeks, but that is flexible. If and when I get computer access, I'll post then.

Skyler, keep it up! You have great potential, and great family support. I hope you realize how much that means. Keep eating raw meat, clean your doghouse regularly, don't chew through the chain and go live with the wolves.

Devro, plan us a really nasty DS ride for my return. Like maybe Brock Creek to Talimena? 5 days maybe? We can always bring along big front sprockets and street it back. Disco, don't bite no poisonous snakes, unless they bite you first.

Keep AOCA going! I wish I had more time to participate, and better computer access. Chris, thanks for the hard work and organization with AOCA. If we ever really accomplish our goals of trails for everyone it will be because of guys like you and Pete. I'm glad someone in the off road world can organize the rest of us. I sure as heck need someone to keep my straight.

Gorman, just be Gorman. Hey, I got a great idea, Gorman. When me and Pete get back, if we can get Pete on a real DS bike, we should all do a long DS ride, and you can meet us with the RV at the end, wherever that may be. Maybe we can even get Kurt and Chris Andrews on DS bikes, they might have to ride while napping with our slow pace, but we always have liquor at the end, so there is a rainbow and the end of the ride.

Jeff, I try to make a big effort to do anything my returning friends and relatives want to do. So far I am getting them all home that way. You must have computer and internet so you can post. What will you need? Carlon had it in Iraq. He was injured there unloading duffle bags and is in Benning trying to get repaired. My good friend GCooper got my mso for my 450. A guy I know from the Airforce, (retired) got me a license so I will ride or do rv support. Same Air Force guy got my VMax looking new, runs hard too. I am putting tag on it, already have ins in force. He wants to buy it but I don't want to sell and he can use it anytime. Him and Cooper have more or less adopted little girls and they are both very sweet and happy. I was up to see Coop recently and I called Wanda to ask she bring Kaitlin. They have been going to the lake a lot. Getting soft aren't I? I believe things are a lot better overseas now. Still, it sounds like bad dty to me. I was at the VA all day yesterday and met a Viet Vet basket case. Last night when I got home, I tried to call my army buddy in Tx. He didn't answer but the phone was still working. We both had GTOs in the 60s. You have got to know I am proud of all you guys for all you have done and are about to do. I long ago gave up the hard drinks, but when you return a toast would be in order, mybe even a little social drinking. Good luck and keep us posted.

Jeff,

I give you a 50% chance of going. I just hit Kuwaitt last week. Only 115 degrees outside. A little dry spell going on right now:) Lots of things can/will go wrong at your MOB station and after to keep you in the USA. If you do make it, congrats and enjoy the ride. Love to tell you what my job is but you know that OPSEC thing.

Pete, in other words, you ain't doing Infantry stuff like I will be? Don't tell me what you are doing or I will be jealous. I'm gonna try and find a Marine unit that has KLRs and run away and live with them. I agree on the 50% chance of actually making it through Camp Shelby. Beleive it or not, I kinda hope that I do make it. Not that I'm all Gung Ho, but almost every Army buddy I know has been, I'm kinda feeling left out.

Gorman, Chris White's mom took in a Korean war vet just before she died. This poor guy was in Spec Ops in Korea to go in and find downed pilots. He took shrapnel in both legs and has plates up to his knees and now has terminal cancer. He was living under a bridge when she met him. Now Chris is trying to take care of the guy. He wants Chris to have power of attorney to make sure he's buried in the Vet's Cemetary in NLR. Every day I remind myself how good I have it.

I just might have stumbled into a good deal, though. I'm going with Infantry, but from the rumors I hear I'll be coming back with them in January so I might only be there about 6 months. That would be too good to be true.

Troops, every time I go to the VA I see something that makes me even more thankful.
I try to make sure that what you guys have to do is not in vain. All that have been killed and mamed would be for nothing if we would pull out, lose.

Just keep us all posted jeffro.

If you do go I sure hope you get tied in with the KLR squads. If not I imagine you will go bozo in just a few days with out a bike and be sent home.

By the time I get there, Pete will have gotten the situation under control, and formed dirt bike clubs of Iraqis all over the country. They'll be doing Vintage racing, Hare Scrambles, Enduros all over Iraq. I don't know how they will wear their turbans with helmets though.
